Abstract
•A numerical method is proposed to evaluate the saturation intensity of fluorescence.•Calculating the saturation intensity of four published CW-stimulated emission depletion (CW-STED) systems.•Based on the saturation intensity, the influence of the wavefront modulation on the resolution of the STED system is investigated.•Based on azimuthally polarized light, the lateral resolution of the STED system is increased by 67%.
