A Computer Application to Help Older and Handicapped People Use Email

E-mail has currently become one of the common software tools that people use to communicate with each other. In addition to the e-mail services provided by the Internet Service Providers (ISPs), there are some freely available popular e-mail services such as the Gmail and Hotmail. In this paper the authors have developed a voice activated system (called NEU-GMAIL) in the form of an interface to Gmail, where, a physically disabled person can join and participate in Gmail with the aid of the NEU-GMAIL system, and send and receive mails whenever they want. A short survey has been carried out by the authors on a group of disabled people to find out the benefits and usability of the developed system and the results showed that the system has been useful and helped the disabled people to interact with their family members and friends using the Gmail.
