•Magmatism in the Xingguo orefield lasted from 160 to 153 Ma and W mineralization formed from 159 to 155 Ma.•Continuing fractional crystallization resulted in the large-scale separation of W-bearing minerals.•The Jiangbei complex and associated W deposits were formed in an extensional environment by subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate during Mesozoic.
