Feeding the world while reducing farmer poverty? Analysis of rice relative yield and labour productivity gaps in two Beninese villages

•Rice yield and labour productivity varied greatly between and within the villages.•The labour productivity gap exceeded the yield gap in both villages.•There was no trade-off between yield and labour or labour productivity in villages.•Viable opportunities to improve farmer benefit from rice were identified.•Rice field level analyses should be combined with farm level analyses.
