摘要

•A new Multi-Band Water Index (MBWI) for Landsat 8 OLI images is proposed.•MBWI performs best compared with other widely used water indices.•MBWI robustly discriminates water from confused backgrounds.•MBWI is able to mitigate the climatic and seasonal influences.
