The Statistical Properties of Raw and Preprocessed ToF Mass Spectra

•Methods of alignment, baseline correction and peak integration for ToF mass spectra are reconsidered.•We demonstrate that carefully designed methods can ensure unbiased, independent Poisson counting behaviour in pre-processed spectra.•Six statistical figures of merit are suggested and applied to confirm these desired characteristics.•Our approach provides improved statistical behaviour in comparison to tested alternative methods.
