•Drought tolerance of wild-type and ABA-deficient tomato mutant were evaluated.•Expression of 14-3-3 genes involved in ABA signaling pathway were regulated by mycorrhizal symbiosis.•AM symbiosis can improve plant water relations through the up-regulation of 14-3-3 genes.
