•A novel strategy to adjust the Al siting in MCM-22 is successfully developed.•Al siting plays an important role in the liquid alkylation performance of MCM-22.•Introduction of PO43− or SO42− makes MCM-22 have more Al species orienting T2 site.•MCM-22 synthesized with PO43− or SO42− in the gel shows better alkylation activity.
