Marine heatwaves off eastern Tasmania: trends, interannual variability, and predictability

•Trends in marine heatwave frequency are positive over nearly all of the domain.•Annual marine heatwave days and penetration depths have increased off SE Tasmania.•The East Australian Current is the dominant driver of marine heatwave variability.•Twelve marine heatwave types have been objectively identified.•Types have their own regionality, seasonality, and ocean-atmosphere patterns.
