Complex small pelagic fish population patterns arising from individual behavioral responses to their environment

•We developed a full life cycle individual based model for small pelagic fish.•This model was applied to round sardinella in the Canary Current Upwelling System.•Seasonal and interannual abundance variability as well as fish length distribution emerge from the model.•Model properties as connectivity patterns and drivers for interannual variability are explored.
