•Cr2O3-ZnO heterostructures are successfully fabricated by a facile route.•Cr2O3 nanoparticles are well decorated on the surfaces of flower-like ZnO.•Cr2O3-ZnO heterostructures show rapid response/recovery behavior to formaldehyde.
