•C-CW/FeS2@RGO is synthesized using cellulose nanowhisker as bio-template.•C-CW/FeS2 composite exhibits rod-like morphology with hollow and porous structure.•C-CW/FeS2 has higher BET surface area and superior catalytic activity than FeS2.•RGO-doping effectively enhances the catalytic activity of C-CW/FeS2 composite.•DSSC assembled with C-CW/FeS2@RGO CE delivers a conversion efficiency of 7.38%.
