•The maximum MSP could be reached to 80% at full load by using suitable combustion control strategy.•Combustion phase control for high MSP could be achieved by appropriate injection timing and EGR rate.•NOx emissions 1.25 g/kW·h with urea-free could be achieved at high load combined with EGR.•Ultra-low soot emissions was reached to 0.004 g/kW·h at high loads with high MSP.•The lowest equivalent BSFC could reached to 188 g/kW·h at full load of MSP80 test point.
