Surgeon symptoms, strain, and selections: Systematic review and meta-analysis of surgical ergonomics

•68% of surveyed surgeons reported experiencing generalized pain from operating.•Minimally-invasive surgeons were more likely to report pain, fatigue, and numbness.•Only 29% of surgeons reported seeking treatment for symptoms.•No association between objective strain on muscles and reported symptoms was found.
