A bio-inspired concept to improve crack resistance of gray cast iron

•An alternating hard and soft structure is inspired by the plant leaf.•The direction of crack growth is changed 90 degrees and the crack path is prolonged.•The hard phase with a better mechanical performance is fabricated by laser alloying.•The design of bio-inspired structure is effective for improving the crack resistance.
