•An iridium catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation of simple ketones has been demonstrated.•Chiral ferrocenyl P,N,N-ligands display excellent results in the hydrogenation.•A wide range of simple ketones are hydrogenated to afford the corresponding chiral alcohols.
