Can the production of wild forest foods be sustained in timber concessions? Logging and the availability of edible caterpillars hosted by sapelli (Entandrophragma cylindricum) and tali (Erythrophleum suaveolens) trees in the Democratic Republic of Congo

•Harvestable tali trees were 7 times more abundant than harvestable sapelli.•Tali trees could yield 4.2–5.2 kg ha−1 year−1 fresh edible caterpillars.•25–40% of harvestable sapelli trees were logged in 2012, leaving 0.03 ha−1.•Sapelli trees could yield 0.74–2.2 kg ha−1 year−1 fresh edible caterpillars.•Precommercial sapelli, 0.135 ha−1, yielded most I oyemensis caterpillars.
