摘要

•Fe3+/ΣFe of MORB glass was determined by XANES spectroscopy to be 0.10(2).•Mössbauer spectra used to resolve Fe3+/ΣFe values <0.1 in basaltic glasses.•Isomer shift and quadrupole splitting values for Fe3+ in glasses are independent of Fe3+/ΣFe.•Fe3+/ΣFe in MORB glasses ∝ (fO2)1/4.•The average fO2 of natural MORB is very close to QFM.
