Bauxite-modified oxygen carrier for chemical looping combustion: A possible solution to the heat of combustion compensation

•Bauxite red mud was modified with CuO via a simple fabrication method to improve the oxygen transfer capacity.•Addition of CuO with a lower combustion heat can bring down the heat difference between the air and fuel reactors.•No deterioration of stability was observed with the addition of CuO.
