Environmental impacts of phosphorus recovery from municipal wastewater

•Phosphorus recovery technologies are evaluated with LCA, MFA and EFA.•Results on gaseous emissions and energy demand vary considerably between technologies.•Trade-offs exist between recovery rate, decontamination, emissions and energy demand.•Excessive use of chemicals caused the highest negative impacts for the technologies.•Credits for fertilizer substitution offset many adverse environmental effects.
