The secondary impact of mining on primates and other medium to large mammals in forest reserves in southwestern Ghana

•Mining poses serious threats to the continent’s natural environment and rich biodiversity.•Mining-induced hunting and logging caused decline of primates in forest reserves adjoining mine sites.•Landscape suffered a net loss in medium to large mammals despite forest rehabilitation after mine closure.
