Wildfire affects space use and movement of white-tailed deer in a tropical pyric landscape

•Fire can influence the distribution and quality of forage and concealment cover.•Fire often attracts ungulates, but white-tailed deer responses vary across studies.•We studied deer response to wildfire in a tropical pyric landscape.•Deer were attracted to the fire but the effect was tempered by philopatry.•Deer increased movement rates and area of use when exposed in the burned area.
