•Empirical correlation for sessile drop evaporation for a broad range of ambient conditions.•Net effect of convection is to increase the rate of diffusion and is size dependent.•Convective transport is moderated according to the inverse square root of the diffusivity.•The ambient gas and pressure have strong effects on the evaporation rate.•Contributions of convection and diffusion remain constant as pressure increases.
