•Void coalescence for combined tension and large amplitude cyclic shearing is shown.•Voids develop protrusions in the shearing place and these evolve for each cycle.•The far-field loading, the void shape, and the void growth are monitored.•Calculations are pushed to complete loss of load carrying capacity.
