This paper presents an effective decoupling strategy to reduce radio frequency interference (RFI) noise from power plane of double data-rate (DDR) memory. Dual-referencing routing with both power and ground plane is widely used in DDR memory but prone to RFI radiation. Simulations are conducted to show a) self-resonance of capacitor significantly enhances effectiveness of decoupling, b) impedance of decoupling capacitor needs to be less than 1 Ō, and c) decoupling capacitors need to be 4-mm away from the trace ends. The effectiveness of this decoupling approach is validated with experiments. These recommendations may be used to reduce RFI risk from dual-referencing and relax the design constraints for mobile devices.
