The effect providing space in excess of standards on the behaviour of budgerigars in aviaries

•We investigated providing more space than is standard for budgerigars in aviaries.•Flight length increased with space allowance.•Flights were longer and more frequent after moving from a small to a large aviary.•There was more wing flapping and tail wagging in small aviaries.•Results suggest welfare benefits of increasing the standards for size of aviaries.
