Lack of evidence of edge age and additive edge effects on carbon stocks in a tropical forest

•No additive or age effects on edges from secondary Atlantic forests.•Few structural differences between edge and interior habitats.•Extensive edge effects combined with historical human disturbances mask differences.•Amazon edge effects patterns do not apply to highly disturbed tropical forests.•In anthropic landscapes, natural regeneration will not lead to a primary forest structure.
