•Fe3O4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites were successfully synthesized by situ growth method.•Different influences on the photocatalytic degradation of RhB were discussed.•Fe3O4/g-C3N4 nanocomposites exhibited greatly enhanced photocatalytic activity.•The photocatalytic degradation mechanism for Fe3O4/g-C3N4 was investigated.
