•Self-organized evolution of Au and Ge composite nanodots under ion irradiation of Au-Ge bilayer film.•Numerical simulations demonstrates formation of molten zones around the ion track in the target.•Observed metal-semiconductor composite nanodot evolution is combined effect of ion-induced dewetting and sputtering.
