Rapid radionuclide identification algorithm based on the discrete cosine transform and BP neural network

•The proposed algorithm is based on the discrete cosine transform and BP neural network.•Feature vector of the spectrum extracted by the proposed method is same as the “ID” of the radionuclide, which does not vary with time, activity, and distance.•The proposed algorithm obtained better results in a relatively authentic environment.
