O21-5 - Echocardiographic Characteristics of Very Elderly Patients with Heart Failure

Background: Early evaluation of cardiac function is important in elderly patients with heart failure because of frequent comorbidities. The purpose of this study was to clarify the echocardiographic characteristics of very elderly heart failure patients with preserved vs. reduced ejection fraction. Methods: We performed transthoracic echocardiography and blood B-type natriuretic peptide analysis of 28 very elderly patients (10 males, mean age 86.4 ± 8.0 years), who were admitted to our hospital with acute exacerbation of heart failure and comorbidities. Echocardiographic measurements followed the American Society of Echocardiography guidelines. Results: Patient data are shown in the Table. Conclusions: Echocardiographic findings suggest that very elderly patients have a high prevalence of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, valvular calcification, and regurgitation without left ventricular remodeling.
