•A rapid strategy for colorimetric determination of methionine (Met) using gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is presented.•This assay was based on anti-aggregation of AuNPs and showed high selectivity and sensitivity.•This assay was applied to detect Met in serum and urine samples.
