•Delayed weaning improved overall lamb performance on pasture.•Delayed weaning reduced overall parasite load of lambs on pasture.•Addition of non-related, non-lactating ewe did not improve lamb health or growth.•Delayed weaning into the feedlot required less grain to reach a marketable weight.
