S-wave logging is expensive and is commonly unavailable for many wells. To improve the accuracy of S-wave velocity prediction, we propose to predict the S-wave velocity using a modified P-L model. The modified P-L model simplifies the relationship between dry rock modulus and rock matrix modulus without reducing the prediction accuracy. Relationships among saturated rock elastic modulus, dry rocks modulus, rock matrix modulus, and mixed fluid modulus are built using Gassmann equation. P-wave velocity is calculated through these relationships. The objective function of S-wave velocity prediction is established by comparing the calculated and measured P-wave velocity. We rearrange the objective function into linear equations sets by means of inversion theory in order to reduce the computation complexity. Predicted S-wave velocities are finally acquired through a few iterations.
