Abstract
Surveys were undertaken over a period of 20 years to document the birds of Sangli district, which included 430 field visits from 1985. The surveys resulted in a checklist of 297 bird species for the district, which included 191 resident, 77 winter migrants, 9 local migrants, 4 breeding migrant, 3 vagrant bird species, 3 resident as well as migrant, 1 passage migrant and status of 9 could not be determined. There were 5 threatened and 19 endemic species amongst all the avifauna. The information obtained on the birds of the district from this survey is compared with records of Butler (1881).
