•δ2H values of C7–C40 n-alkanes change by up to 25‰ during heating.•Hydrogen isotope changes occur at temperatures as low as 60°C.•ACL values decrease during heating at temperatures as low as 60°C.•Hydrogen fractionation in alkanes is a function of temperature and time.
