•Successfully tuned the surface wettability of micropatterned electrospun nanofibers for controlled drug release.•Facile and scalable template assisted electrospinning was used for micropatterning.•Micropatterned nanofibers successfully prevented undesirable burst release of drug.•Succeeded in expanding zero order profile from 30min (non-patterned) to 12h (micropatterned mat).
