Abstract
Speaking at the First Pacific Regional HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Disease Conference in Nadi Fiji in February 1999 this government official states that the community at large in Western Highlands Province has taken time to realize the seriousness of HIV AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases. He notes that there are large numbers of people infected with STDs in the region making it easier for HIV infection to spread. Little progress was made in awareness until late 1994 when the Provincial AIDS Committee aided by external donors and international agencies began to mobilize nongovernmental organizations to assist in its programs. The national and provincial departments of health provided funds manpower and other resources. Awareness has been raised and more people are taking precautions but much still remains to be done.
