•Novel EOR approach using nano-cellulose based nano-fluids was proposed.•Surface-grafting was successfully conducted on nano-cellulose towards EOR use.•Surface wettability was notably altered caused by colloids wedge spreading.•NC-KYSS fluid presented superior salinity tolerance and salt-thickening behaviors.•Displacement mechanisms were elucidated through a visualization micromodel.
