e12052Background: Breast conserving therapy is one of the major advances in breast cancer over the past two decades. However, socioeconomic barriers and ethnic disparities still exist that preclude patients from receiving breast-conserving therapy. The current study aimed at determining the rate of mastectomy versus breast-conserving surgery in a low income Hispanic population at our institution and assesses factors that might affect disparity in surgical options. Methods: After obtaining IRB approval, we retrospectively used our Breast Cancer Database and reviewed consecutive cases between 2011-2013 and determined clinical characteristics. Unpaired and Fisher’s exact tests were used to compare the clinical and demographic characteristics between the two types of surgery.
