•The influence of non-contact regions on press-mounting force was investigated by FEM.•The resistant force generated by non-contact regions must be considered for press-fit curve prediction.•A simplified model was proposed to calculate the resistant force.•The new analytical method was established for press-fit curve prediction.•The new analytical method was compared with numerical results and validated by experiments.
