•Populations of S. zeamais show different levels of resistance to insecticides.•First report of Procetyl on nanoformulations (NFs) in insects.•EO of L. sidoides, thymol and its NFs showed biological activity in S. zeamais.•The grain consumption by S. zeamais decrease with an increase of NF's concentration.•The NFs prototypes are efficient in the management of S. zeamais populations.
