Effect of swirl flow on spray and combustion characteristics with heavy fuel oil under two-stroke marine engine relevant conditions

•The simulation of spray combustion with heavy fuel oil (HFO) is carried out.•Three different spray combustion experiments for HFO are employed.•Swirl flow has different effect on the atomization and combustion process.•Local unburnt region is observed at low oxygen concentration with swirl flow.
