•Spectroscopy and microscopy of agglomerated Ag-islands on unsupported free standing graphene.•Lognormally distributed range of island sizes grown by diffusing and coalescing clusters.•Crystalline structures and metastable fivefold-symmetric structures of Ag-nanoparticles in the size range of 2–3 nm diameter.•XPS Coulomb shift in accordance to size-dependent dynamical liquid-drop-model.
