Abstract
Lubricants in industrial environment help in reducing friction and wear between the contacting surfaces. The mineral based lubricants have been extensively used in industries over the last couple of decades. However, due to the stringent environmental regulations, environmentally safe lubricants are being sought that can replace their traditional mineral based counterparts. In this context a new eco-friendly bio-based lubricant derived from the non-edible Karanja oil has been synthesized and experimentally tested for its tribological properties. Major objective of the present work has been to study the influence of temperature on the viscosity of bio-lubricant and thereby its effect on the tribological performance. The change in viscosity and density of the lubricant with temperature has been studied over the range from room temperature to 100 degrees C. Further, the tribological experiments have been performed on the four-ball contact geometry under varying temperature conditions. The friction and wear behavior of the bio-lubricant has been studied and reported as a function of temperature. From the studies it is revealed that the viscosity of the bio-lubricants is significantly influenced with temperature and this in turn affects their in-situ tribological performance. The present study will be of significant help in selecting the bio-lubricants for various industrial applications.
