Abstract
•Cancer stem cell (CSC) epithelial cell adhesion molecule (Ep-CAM) expression may correlate with CRC tumorigenesis.•Frequent overexpression of Ep-CAM was a favorable factor for CRC progression and metastasis.•Loss of Ep-CAM expression correlated with the progression, metastasis, and poor prognosis of patients with CRC.•Ep-CAM expression may be a potential marker for the detection of CRC.
