•Ni-La-Sn trimetallic system is proposed as catalyst for ethanol steam reforming.•High temperature treatment leads to NiO and La2Sn2O7 crystalline phases.•Ni3Sn and Ni3Sn2 compounds were formed during the reforming test.•The catalyst remains active after 80hours of reaction time.
