Abstract
To assess the sexual satisfaction in a group of patients >50 years old and its relationship with erectile dysfunction (ED) and four common comorbidities. Cross-sectional, descriptive, nation-wide and multi-center study among patients >50 with hypertension, dyslipidemia, mood disorders or diabetes, who visit the General Practitioner. Exclusion criteria: ECOG>1 or current treatment for ED. Clinical and demographic data were collected and the Sexual Health Inventory for Men (SHIM) and Brief Sexual Satisfaction Questionnaire (BSSC) were fulfilled. The relationship between variables was analyzed with logistic regression models. 863 subjects were recruited with a median age of 60 yo. 83.2% of them had at least one comorbidity. 580 patiens (67.21%) were insatisfied with their sexuality. The group with at least one comorbidity had a higher prevalence of sexual insatisfaction (69.82%) than the group with no comorbidities (54.17%) (p=0.0003). Among the subjects with sexual insatisfaction, 78.58% answered their problem was erection issues which was the most bothersome problem for 66.98% of them. 85.61% of the patients presented ED, most mild or mild-moderate (SHIM median score 14). A higher prevalence of sexual insatisfaction was observed with a lower SHIM score, although 58.97% of patients with some degree of ED reported sexual satisfaction. After adjusment for age (<70 vs ≥70) we found a strong association between ED and sexual satisfaction (p<0.0001), but we found that in subjects satisfied with their sexuality, those with ED were older. The association between presence of comorbidities and sexual satisfaction was also strong after age adjustment (p=0.0006), although in patients ≥70 there was no difference between these variables.
