An efficient and robust heterogeneous mesoporous montmorillonite clay catalyst for the Biginelli type reactions

•AT-Mont. catalyst was synthesized from montmorillonite clay.•Catalyst possesses high surface area about 400m2/g.•Conversion up to 98% was observed for Biginelli reaction.•The catalyst remains active for several catalytic runs.
