Erosion of Fe-W model system under normal and oblige D ion irradiation

•Mass removal rate for FeW model films strongly decreases with increasing D fluence.•Prolonged irradiation changes the surface morphology and leads to surface roughening.•Formation of nanodots or nano-ripples depending on ion impact angle.•W enrichment is not exclusively responsible for the observed reduction in erosion.
